The Vector 800 is a compact electronic device with a sophisticated form factor. Our task was to verify the size and shape as well as the ergonomics and usage of the proposed concept. We began by cutting a CNC model out of high density model foam; this helped in concept confirmation. Once the mechanical design was complete, a detailed prototype was created by CNC using ABS. This face to face interaction with the model helped all to understand the relevance that had to be achieved for the final delivery. The dimensional resemblance of the machined ABS to the final dimensions of the manufactured part allowed the client and the design team to see the mechanical details before tooling; this gave the group the material feel of an actual injection molded part. The client’s reaction to the prototype was positive. The prototype was then painted to replicate the look and feel of the final product.
